May the 4th be with you 🌌 For today, put together we have:

  • The future has arrived: Prepare for virtual reality interviews.

  • Résumé tips: Optimizing for applicant tracking systems.

  • Star Wars Day: The actor who turned down Han Solo.

TODAY’S AFFIRMATION: I release the tendency to compare.

TALKING POINT

Beware! VR interviews are nigh 👻

Using VR

Virtual environment meetings are set to become reality in the near future. And while virtual hang-outs will bring us closer to loved ones living far away, their use isn’t going to end there. Dun-dun-durr! 😱 Companies are going to start using them, too.

Video conversations are expected to be replaced by virtual reality interviews. This means your avatar will be entering a computer-generated office and greeting another avatar. Which makes us wonder…

Will the sweat patches under your armpits be visible? Will your slight eye twitch be captured when the interviewer specifies what their “competitive salary” is? And what happens when the software crashes or your WiFi acts up?

There’s a lot we don’t know. But if VR can make remote interviews a little more personal and a little less yucky, then we’re for it.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Optimize your résumé for the bots 🤖

It’s 2023. There are no flying cars around, and printers are still made of nightmares. Yet, in many other ways, technology’s come far. Far enough to be able to scan your résumé before it reaches a human being and decide whether or not you’d be a good fit for the role.

Though this may sound intimidating, the good news is that, unlike humans (and printers), machines tend to be predictably. That’s why you just need to crack the applicant tracking system code once.

Our top 5 tips for getting past these scrutinizing virtual eyes and having your application read by humans:

  1. Put the job title in your headline.

  2. Incorporate keywords from the listing that refer to desirable skills.

  3. Pick an ATS-friendly résumé format.

  4. Use clear section headings such as “Work Experience”.

  5. Proofread many, many times!

Scarface in space? Almost…

scarface in star wars

A fun little fact, which you might find interesting even if you’re not celebrating Star Wars Day. Back in the 1970s, Al Pacino was offered the role of Han Solo in Star Wars. However, given the crazy demand he was in (“they’d give me Queen Elizabeth to play!” he once remarked), Pacino turned the role down.

Harrison Ford, who took his place, ended up raking in millions playing the series' Millennium Falcon pilot. But Pacino doesn't seem to regret his decision: “I gave Harrison Ford a career,” he joked.
