TALKING POINT

May Day, mayday!

happy international workers day

⛏️ International Workers’ Day celebrates the achievements of 19th-century workers across the world. Specifically, the international demonstrations that were organized at the time led to the adoption of the 8-hour workday. To put this into context, people worked 12 or 14 hours daily then!

Despite this accomplishment, workers are still stressed and overworked a century and a half later. Estimates show that a quarter of US employees are still working overtime, many with no compensation.

And while worker productivity has tripled in the last 50 years, wages have stagnated. Add that to ever-skyrocketing prices for essentials, like housing, and you’re left with a demographic that’s demoralized at best.

What can we learn from these statistics? And how can companies become more people-centric?

TODAY’S ADVICE

Sharing is caring, but oversharing is annoying.

When we spend 8 or so hours every day in the workplace with the same people, friendships are bound to blossom, or at least we become a little more comfortable with the people we work with. So, we start opening up and sharing aspects of our lives.

😬 But sharing can quickly become oversharing, especially if the discussion turns to things like religion, politics, personal finance, office gossip, and dating. And this can make work relationships awkward and sometimes even cause managers to doubt employees’ commitment to their job or the company itself.

Some tips to consider when you’re about to divulge that next tidbit about yourself:

  • Ask yourself if it’s the right time or place. Don’t stand in the way of others’ productivity.

  • Consider who you’re sharing with. Sharing your life with a work bestie is usually fine, but not with someone you barely know.

  • Determine if it’s just stirring the pot. Don’t create gossip or unnecessary drama.

  • Focus on listening rather than responding. Give everyone an equal level of sharing.

  • Don’t force connections that don’t exist. You don’t have to be friends with everyone.

And, finally, if you do overshare something, recover gracefully from it. Apologize and move on.

We love this so matcha!

Dr Eric Berg refers to matcha tea as “green tea on steroids”. That’s because of its energizing, health-boosting properties, which also make it an ideal alternative for coffee.

So, if you’re looking for a drink that’ll boost your mental clarity and not cause jitteriness, this could be a matcha made in heaven.
