Patent Drop

Well, hello Friday! 👋 What to expect in today’s email:

  • Pizza delivery: Under the sea, under the sea…

  • Gossipy coworkers: Tips on how to handle them.

  • Starting a new job: A checklist to help you succeed.

💡 QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Work hard in silence. Let success make the noise.” — Frank Ocean, American singer

THE BIG IDEA

Underwater pizza delivery, anyone? 🤿

neon light pizza

Have you heard of the Jules’ Undersea Lodge? If you haven’t, it’s near the coast of Florida, at the bottom of Emerald Lagoon. The lodge, which once operated as a research laboratory, sits 28 feet below the surface.

🐠 For those who want to tick “(safely) sleeping with the fishes” from their bucket list, rooms start at $ 1,125 per night. This includes WiFi (yes, really), an Amazon Fire TV Stick, snacks and drinks.

But with check-in at 10:30am and check-out at 9:00am the following day, aquanauts are bound to be hungry. That’s where Daniel Blezio comes in! The professional scuba diver and instructor, who also works as mission director for the lodge, hand-delivers pizzas underwater to his visitors.

If the concept has left you scratching your head, let us explain it in more detail. Communicating with “surface support” (that’s the overground reception) through an intercom, guests can order a pizza and have it delivered between 4:30–5:00pm. When called to, Daniel uses a watertight case to transport the goods, ensuring they arrive in tip-top shape. 🍕

As you’d expect, Daniel gets a kick out of his unusual job — and how could he not? He and his colleagues are the only people in the world to make a living this way!

TOGETHER WITH PATENT DROP

Behind Every Big Tech Rollout…

…there is a hidden trail of evidence that can help predict the future of tech.

The winners. The losers. The next big move from Meta, Alphabet, or Netflix that could shake up the entire landscape.

🦹 While tech companies prefer to work in secrecy with code names fitting of a Bond movie, patent applications can illuminate the strategic roadmaps of the biggest (and smallest) disruptors in tech.

The editors at Patent Drop sift through the (incredibly dense) US Patent and Trademark to uncover the patents with potential to change everything.

It is easy to read, comes just 2x per week, and costs nothing.

 📝 FRIDAY’S TO DO:

Do a mental check-in with yourself 🧠 It’s been a long week. Notice how you’re feeling and address it, so that negative thoughts don’t begin to pile up.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Dealing with a gossipy coworker like a boss

🙊 Every workplace is vulnerable to gossip — courtesy of the Chief Executive Gossiper. And while some forms of gossip can be okay (they can even be healthy and productive), the petty and unprofessional kind is definitely not. Which is naturally the CEG’s specialty.

It can lower morale, be exhausting and waste everyone’s time. Not to mention it’s unethical and can even be a form of harassment.

It’s up to you to take the high road and put an end to it. How:

  • Don’t participate. End the gossip with you, and don’t pass it any further.

  • Be busy. The less available you are to appreciate the gossiper’s tales, the better.

  • Turn it around. Say something positive about the person being attacked.

  • Keep your private life private. Don’t give the gossiper ammunition.

  • Choose your work friends wisely. Make sure you can trust them fully before you start opening up.

  • Call them out. Tell them how uncomfortable they make you feel.

  • Escalate things. If the gossip continues, consider speaking to your manager or to HR.

ASK AN EXPERT

“I’m not your assistant!”

Our experts are ready to answer your work, career and job search-related questions to help you progress like a champ 🏆

This week's question comes from Nicola L in Sydney, Australia:

My manager keeps treating me like his assistant. What can I do?

“First things first, sit down with your manager and share your concerns. If you don’t mind running the occasional personal errand from him from time to time, you can mention that, but you need to (calmly and diplomatically) tell him that these little tasks aren’t part of your job description.

“Best-case scenario? He stops assigning you personal tasks. Worst-case scenario? He pushes back and keeps assigning you work outside your job description. In this case, you’ll need to escalate things to HR.”
