OPINION
Let’s talk mental health first aid 🚑
The office is full of hazards: there are cables to trip on, paper cutters to stab your fingers with, and coffee machines spitting bubbling, hot water. As a result, every office has its well-stocked first aid kit in case of emergency.
But what happens with those health hazards that can’t be seen? Like that super rude coworker who loves to insult you, or the seventh “priority” task that’s just been added to your to-do list? And that’s not taking into account everything that might be going wrong outside of work.
😟 Stress, conflict and burnout are everywhere. If we’re not the ones being affected, it’s the person next to us. Yet there’s little focus on learning to support someone who’s struggling. That’s why we think that every team should have a mental health first aider — which is an actual thing, by the way.
Through training, mental health first aiders learn to recognize the signs of poor mental health in the workplace and how to provide early intervention. By practicing active listening and showing empathy, they can ease emotional distress and help their coworkers seek appropriate help.

TODAY’S ADVICE
Looks matter (for résumés, anyway)
True, your résumé is about your experience, skills and accomplishments. That’s what makes employers sit up and pay attention — and ultimately invite you to an interview.
But how that information is presented is just as important. Hiring managers might just discard your application altogether if it’s poorly designed. Even if you’re the ideal candidate for the job 😮
These design and formatting tips will help you stand out from the crowd — for the right reasons:
Choose a professional font. Serif or sans serif typefaces typefaces work best (Comic Sans is a no-no, as are outdated typefaces like Times New Roman). Consider pairing fonts, and set font sizes at 10–12pts.
Add a splash of color. Traditionally, résumés should be in black (text) and white (background). But you can optionally add a third color for section headings and design elements 🎨
Make use of white space. Add consistent line spacing between sections, paragraphs and text. This helps you create a document that’s easy to read and visually appealing.
Use bullet points. Break up paragraphs into bulleted lists where possible (particularly in your experience section). This makes your résumé more user-friendly.

What’s on your career bucket list?
Traditional bucket lists include things like skydiving, swimming with sharks, and traveling to seven continents. As exciting (or terrifying) as those activities may sound, it’s a good idea to add way less wild stuff to your bucket list, too. Why? Because if you’re going to spend 90,000 hours of your life working (which, statistically, you will), you may as well receive a kick out of it.
Yes, we’re talking about creating a career bucket list. So, what sort of things could you add on there? Some ideas:
👨🏫 Becoming a mentor 🌈 Going after your dream job 💪 Leading a team 🎓 Pursuing further studies
Which of these will you add to yours?

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING
David says: Fall behind to get ahead
Most of us have heard the “10,000 hours” rule, stating that that’s the amount of time it takes to master any craft. However, it turns out that early specialization is the exception (not the rule) among people who end up successful.
In this video, best-selling author David Epstein explains why delaying specialization is crucial in succeeding.
