Hello Friday! 😊 In today’s email:

  • Vending machines: They can make you 30k a month!

  • Mandatory work outings: Thanks. But no thanks.

  • Résumé mistakes: Avoid them like the plague.

💡 QUOTE OF THE DAY: “Happy people plan actions. They don’t plan results.” — Denis Waitley, American motivational speaker

THE BIG IDEA

Who knew vending machines could make you rich? 🤯

You walk up to the break room’s vending machine. You put in a few bucks and press a few buttons, et voilà: you’ve got yourself a soda, a chocolate bar and a bag of chips. You go back to your desk, and you think nothing else of it.

Well, some people do. Particularly, the people who placed that vending machine in your office.

Like Quinn Miller. In the summer of 2020, Queen purchased two vending machines for 5k and placed them in a local office building. All part of a side hustle. A side hustle that eventually saw Quinn quit his job at an ad-tech startup where he was earning 240k.

Why? Well, with 57 vending machines scattered across his hometown, he’s making 30k a month — or 360k a year. And all for 6 hours of work a week.

Want to follow in his footsteps? Quinn shares his five-step process:

1. Land a busy location.
2. Acquire a quality machine.
3. Pick up a credit card reader.
4. Pay someone to move the machine to your location.
5. Stock with products from wholesale stores.

 📝 FRIDAY’S TO DO:

Declutter your workspace 🧽 Take 30 minutes out of your day and tidy up your workspace. Clear out unwanted documents, wipe down your equipment, and refresh your area for a more calming space and mind.

TALKING POINT

Can we ban mandatory socializing?

How do you feel about mandatory work outings? 🙄 You know, those painfully awkward get-togethers where you and your coworkers must pretend to like one another. Though there are no concrete stats we could find, we believe the general consensus not to be in favor of these gatherings.

So, is there anything you can do to evade getting invited to these miserable hangouts? You can try what one man did a few years back: keep declining… And then sue your employer. Well, that’s sort of how the story went.

We’re referring to someone known online as Mr T, who, back in 2015, was fired for not being “fun enough”. 👨‍⚖️ Taking his employer to court, Mr T fought to legally claim his right to be boring. And, just a few months ago, he won the case!

But really — should it boil down to that? Can’t we let people choose when to socialize and with who?

TODAY’S ADVICE

The résumé mistakes that will cost you the job 🤦‍♀️

We all know how important it is to have a well-written résumé. But we sometimes forget that even the smallest of mistakes can hurt your job application.

5 résumé mistakes you need to make sure you’re not making:

1. Making spelling and grammar errors. They make you seem unprofessional and careless. Proofread your résumé (and then proofread it again), and ask someone else to look over it too.

2. Adding irrelevant information. Keep your résumé focused on the job you’re applying for. Including info that doesn’t relate to the job at all can be confusing and clutter your résumé, making it hard for employers to find the experience and skills they’re looking for.

3. Writing a novel. Hiring managers don’t have the time to read page after page (after page) of irrelevant information. Keep your résumé concise and straight to the point. Consider keeping it to one page if possible.

4. Not including quantifiable results. Use concrete examples of how you’ve made a difference in previous roles, including metrics for sales growth, achieving targets or boosting engagement levels.

5. Not customizing it to the job. A generic résumé won’t stand out in the sea of applicants. Tailor yours to the specific job you’re applying for, and use language that mirrors the job description.
