TALKING POINT

Copycat behavior is fueling layoffs

A few months ago, Stanford professor Jeffrey Pfeffer used the words “social contagion” while talking about layoffs. With it, he implied that companies like to mimic one another… without always knowing why or realizing it. In his eyes, this copycat behavior is what’s fueling mass layoffs around the world. And for what?

If we listen to the experts, layoffs simply aren't worth it. They come with decreased staff morale and costly severance packages, which creates problems down the line. Not only that, but they can be devastating for staff members. Indeed, layoffs have been linked to higher mortality rates.

Still, the trend appears to be unrelenting. So much so that the World Economic Forum has added “copycat layoffs” to its list of workplace buzzwords for 2023.

TODAY’S ADVICE

Dress for the job you want, not the one you have 👗

What we wear says a lot about who we are, or at least who we want to be perceived as.

In other words, the sharper you look, the better are your chances of landing a promotion. (Of course, your hard work, merit, ability and performance will be the top factors for consideration.)

So, how can you dress for success?

1. Research your company’s dress code. Make sure you’re dressing appropriately for your workplace. And if in doubt, err on the side of caution.

2. Invest in quality clothes. Spending a little more upfront on quality items will pay off in the long run, as they’ll last longer and look sharper.

3. Experiment with accessories. Add some personality with bold colors, statement jewelry or accessories that show you’re up to date with current trends.

4. Take care of your grooming. Your clothes are only part of the picture, so take care of your hair, beard, nails and skin to look your best.

5. Elevate your style. Don’t be afraid to mix up your style choices and incorporate a few trendy pieces into your wardrobe. Just make sure they still fit within the company’s dress code.
